How can it block an email?

Emails in sending Queue

This is a temporary block. The server considers the factual data from the earlier emails, keeps it as a record and analyses the future mails and decides if it has accept or delete the message received.

Emails are queued when the Internet Service Provider accepts only a specific amount of emails per hour and anything more than a certain limit, the server cannot accept and demands the remaining to be sent later. The system will continue to send the message as per the server rules and the emails that are not sent to the inbox after multiple attempts will be discarded.

RBL (Real-time Blackhole List)

It was initially developed to block IPs or domains that sends SPAM. Individual users, organizations share a list of IP addresses with spam complaints. Email server admins can set a protocol based on the lists so that if an email comes in from the restricted Ips list, the corresponding emails are sent to the spam folder and blocked from entering the users’ inbox.

Greylisting

Some companies create a Greylist. The emails coming from a specific set of IP addresses mentioned in the Greylist are filtered out and quarantined which are later sent after few hours.

IP reputation systems

There are IP reputation systems that gives a score for IP addresses corresponding the number of spam complaints.

The Internet Service Providers evaluate emails based on the IP reputation systems. So the emails are bounced back to sender so this helps the sender to take essential steps to tweak and send the emails again.

IP Reputation

It is the most commonly used filtering technique. All the malicious Ips that are known to send spams are extracted and listed. Admins use these from the list as the source to accept or deny mails based on the spam complaints.

URL Reputation

Much similar to IP reputation, the recent filters list and categorize URLs as spam based on the complaints and source of origin and use them as samples to evaluate the IP associated with the source of URL.

Authentication of the Sender

Content Filtering
